Popular as exterior cladding and roofing, Cedar Shingles will naturally provide many years of service due to their natural weather resistance. Thinner at the butt than shakes, Cedar Shingles are always sawn on both sides, whereas Cedar Shakes are split on at least one side. Shingles are generally installed on sidewalls, rather than roofs.
Cedar shakes are split straight or on an angle from a block, either by hand or by using power equipment, which exposes at least one highly textured natural grain surface and are traditionally thicker than Cedar Shingles, which are sawn. More often, Shakes are used for roofing than Shingles.
